Accountability & Third Party Certification
It's unfortunate that companies don't always tell the truth in their environmental
claims. It's called greenwash and often consumers don't recognize it for what it is.
Fortunately, third-party certifications exist to hold manufacturers accountable for
their marketing claims and reassure consumers that those claims are accurate.
At Tandus, we accept responsibility for our products and processes and we want you to
believe us. However, we don't expect you to take us a face value - in fact, we urge you to
require manufacturers to provide thirty-party certification proof of their claims. We know
you don't have the time to fully research every product you want to specify. Let the
certifications speak for themselves.
There are number of environmental standards and protocols in the marketplace. Below you
can learn about some of the practices and processes that Tandus embraces.
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
2008 marks the institution of an exciting and ambitious environmental program at our
Dalton, Georgia, and Calhoun, Georgia, facilities - the implementation of an Environmental
Management System (EMS). An EMS involves the maintenance of regulatory compliance and the
measurement and reporting of environmental metrics with a continual focus on reductions.
As a company, we have set environmental targets and goals, are measuring our progress and
communicating our initiatives internally and externally. This program requires involvement
from every plant, every department and every employee.

FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION GUIDES TO ENVIRONMENTAL MARKETING CLAIMS
Because it can be difficult to discern the reliability of claims, a widely recognized set of
guidelines is useful. The United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has taken an active
interest in promoting good sales practices by establishing a thoughtfully crafted set of
guidelines that can be effectively used as the basis for evaluating environmental marketing claims.

LEED™ ACCREDITATION
Put forth by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the LEED Green Building Rating
System™ is the nationally accredited benchmark for the design, construction and
operation of high-performance green buildings.
Not only we do produce products that can help specifiers earn LEED points, we also
strive toward it ourselves. In 2008 we earned LEED Silver Green Building Certification
for our Southeast Design Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

Individual products do not carry LEED points - instead they can contribute toward LEED points. Attached
you will find documents showing how the purchase of Tandus products - Monterey, C&A or Crossley - can
contribute to your LEED points total.

NSF-140 SUSTAINABLE CARPET ASSESSMENT STANDARD
Continuing a 40 year heritage of excellence, Tandus brand C&A has become the ONLY commercial carpet brand
to have ALL of its recycled content product lines certified as Environmentally Preferable under the nationally
recognized NSF-140 Sustainable Carpet Assessment Standards (SCAS) certification program.NSF-140 is the first
certification program that evaluates all measurable aspects of the environmental impact of carpets, from
manufacturing to installation to performance to end-of-life issues even to the social performance of the
company. Because the certifications are backed by independent third-party audits, designers and specifiers
can use NSF-140 as an accurate measure to compare the environmental preferability of different carpet brands
and different product lines within brands.
